Outing with the Kids

Outings with our kids are so predictable. As we go into the store, the kids are going to condescendingly recite to each other the rules: No screaming, no running away, no hiding from Mom, and stay by the cart. As soon as we cross the threshold into the store, those rules are forgotten and they break them all at once.

Yet, sometimes our outings are unpredictable. Take last night for instance, when I got a spur-of-the-moment urge to go to D.I. Our family loves D.I. I can buy my kids' books for 50 cents a pop. My kids LOVE books, so a trip to D.I. is a great incentive for them to clean up the books they already have, which are strewn all over the floor so we can't see the carpet. Anyway...

Last night was funny. The kids actually behaved pretty well. (See? Unpredictable.) We immediately split up, Peter and the big kids went straight to the books, and I checked out the kids clothes with Levi. When I caught up with Peter, he was cracking up at the kids. Here's what was going on, according to him:

Peter heard Eden in the next aisle over talking to a little kid who was probably 5 or so. Then she said:

Eden: Look, I want you to see my daddy! *Eden brings the kid over to Peter*
Eden: Look, Daddy, here's my new friend! *awkward silence* (poor kid)
Eden: Look, he has one of these! *Eden points to the Batman logo on his shirt*

Here was this poor kid, being introduced to some weird girl's tall, scary dad.

Peter also heard a convo between Jonah and another kid. Jonah was sitting on the floor reading and the kid was looking at the books on the shelf.

Kid: Look at this book. How about this book? *showing it to Jonah*
Jonah: *annoyed* I don't know.
Kid: But I have this book- what about this book?
Jonah *more annoyed* I don't know what you're talking about! (Translation: I'm reading; leave me alone!)

At the D.I. in Mesa, there's a little ramp that you go down to go to a separate room where they keep the toys. Eden found a little stool to stand on so she could greet everybody loudly as they went up and down the ramp.

Eden: Hi! How are you? I'm Eden! What's your name? *repeat 100 times*

So, I guess our D.I. trip was predictable after all. It amazes me how strong these kids' personalities are. Peter and I could have guessed how the kids would act. Eden is such an extrovert, and Jonah, well, he can be a little moody when he's trying to read and someone interrupts!

As for me, well, I scored a pair of skinny jeans for Eden (so cute!) and a ton of books for the kids, and one for me to replace that piece of crap I was reading before.
I'm sure I'll spend at least an hour with Jonah on this one:
It's funny how irrational my last post sounds when I reread it. So thanks for the good advice; that book is gone!

hilarious. I LOVE DI!!! Those 2 kids of your ARE predictable. I already know them SO well...and Levi, well we'll see how he develops a little further down the road, maybe a mix between the two? Anyway, Fun! I could spend half a day in DI! By the way, that author you chose wrote a book that Christy just reviewed on her blog...did you see that? Anyway, I'm kind of trying to read a book, but just am not really...bit of a reading break for me I guess...

Sounds like a fun outing. The Goose Girl is a great book. It is one that I can read over and over. My five year old son loves the Waldo books and he can definately sit and look at them for hours.

Stories about your kids always crack me up! We love DI, too. Let me know if that book is any good. AND--I can relate to your last book post. I finally gave up on reading Jane Eyre. I was over half way through with that thing and just did not like it. Everyone else talks about how it's their fav book but man, it was BORING.

Okay:
1. I'm totally reminded of Eden in primary last week. She was walking down the hall with her teacher and proudly announced to me, "I have to go potty so bad!"

2. My brother had that Waldo book when he was a kid and loved it.

3. Marianne, I loved Jane Eyre. It's so dark and mysterious!

Marianne, the movie might change your mind about quitting the book! It is SOOO good. We need to have a Jane Eyre night!

Oh my goodness! Eden and the stool...too funny!! That girl is going to be some kind of tourist guide or something someday. She is a nut. And yes, it does sound like Jonah to be annoyed when he is trying to read. Too much...
Parenthood should be hilarious for you two for quite some time. Thank goodness.

Hilarious! I loved the Goose Girl and the Glee soundtrack--I call it my happy music. :) I also loved the t.v. show but maybe we shouldn't get into that since I already know how you feel about American Idol (i love it). :)
