I would have posted this on my other blog, but since this was my first time, and I can't give great instructions on how to do this, I will just post it here. I have some things to post over there, but I've just been busy and lazy.
On Thursday, my friend, Kemra, came over to show me how to bottle chicken and to let me use her pressure canner. I bottled around 20 pounds of chicken, which will last for 3-5 years! I got the chicken on sale at Sprouts (no hormones, etc.) for only $1.88/lb.
It was a little scary pressure canning for my first time; I thought I was going to blow up my kitchen. But once we got started, it really wasn't bad.
I forgot to take pictures as I went, but I did snap a few. I had trimmed and chopped all of my chicken so it was ready to go in my clean pint jars.

I added 1/2 tsp. of salt and 1/2 tsp. of garlic powder to each jar.

They had to go in the canner for 75 minutes. My whole house smelled like chicken, but it smelled pretty good, actually. Here is my finished product. The chicken cooks and creates its own broth while in the canner.

Thanks, Kemra, for coming over and showing me how to do this!

Wow, I have to admit, that looks pretty gross. If you told me it was pears I'd be fine...but chicken? hmmm. You're very resourceful though! Your food storage is going to be AMAZING.
It actually is supposed to taste really good. I haven't opened any yet though...
Wow! That is so amazing, and way to go on the killer deal you got for the chicken. I'm glad your kitchen is still in one piece. What a great way to store meat in your food storage. I've been trying to figure out the best way to do it without breaking the bank on canned meat.
My sister taught me how to bottle chicken a couple years ago. We do it every year now. It is fabulous. You will see quickly how fast and convient it is to use for meal preparations too. Great job!
A friend of mine canned some chicken during the summer. I should have used her pressure cooker while she was here (because she has moved far away). Oh well. That is cool that you got some canned. Thanks for showing us how to do it.
Way to go! Did you use the flame tamer? I really need to go get one of those. Your chicken looks great!
