Blonde or Not?

Okay, I was not planning on posting on this subject, but I wanted to clear some things up on my poll. Maybe I need to explain myself a little and give some background first. I am not posting for reassurance. I might not get that anyway. I'm just posting for myself and to get my anxieties out. Don't think that I am really that concerned about this. This is just for fun.

I have never ever dyed my hair before. I have never even highlighted it. I guess the main reason why is because I actually like my hair color. I have not felt the need to change it. I am also afraid of someone screwing up and it looking hideous. I think everyone probably feels that way when they dye their hair for the first time. I used to be afraid that if I ever dyed it, it would never ever look the same, like my hair would start growing out a different color and I would lose my lovely red locks. Now that I am older, I think I realize that it is very unlikely if even possible that this would happen. I didn't want to deal with the upkeep, or pay for it. I haven't ever paid more than $40 to get my hair done, and I have gotten it done for as little as $12. Also, what if I don't like it? I guess I think that every time I go to the salon, even though I don't get color.

So now for the reasons why I am considering dying my hair. First off, most of you have probably dyed you hair at least once, so you probably can't understand why I am making such a big deal about something that seems so everyday for you. Since I have never dyed my hair, and watching sisters, cousins and friends have fun changing it up a bit, I feel like I have almost missed out on a rite of passage. I feel like the only kid in the whole school who hasn't ditched. It seems like fun to try something new, but I have only observed it from the outside. I don't want to have had the same hairstyle my whole life, and I haven't really changed it for a long time. I feel like it's now or never. If I don't get the guts until I start going gray, it'll be too late to do something fun, and even if I did, it would look like a mid-life crisis. Plus, I have reason to think it might look good. Look at these redheads who have gone blonde. I think they look pretty good.

Donna from That 70's Show
Lindsay Lohan (a few different shades)
Nicole Kidman
Okay, If I looked like any of these people, I could have green hair and look beautiful. But still, I think blonde might be possible for me. I do think I need to explain what "going blonde" would mean for me, though. It's not like I'd go platinum or anything. I'd want it to look as natural as possible, but still be quite a change.

I will not be offended by your honest (but not harsh, please) thoughts if you want to share them. That being said, I'll do what I want anyway. It will definitely not be permanent. I am just getting a little bored of my hair, like most people get at some point. I can't wait until I'm 40 to do something like this. I am curious why so many of you chose "Yikes! Don't do it!" Now that you have all of the info, would it really be that bad?

HaHa, I know what you mean about change. I understand why and now I think you should give it a try. And if you dont like it you could always go back or whatever. I think you should do it.

You're right! You do have a great hair color, but I think it would be awesome to change it up for fun! It'll grow back and you can always dye it back red if you don't like it! But then, I am one who dyes my hair often. Good luck! And, you're right again, all those women look fabulous blonde! You will too!

I think it would look great too, it would be a change, but a good one. If your too nervous, start with a lot of Highlights and then go from there. Good Luck & I can't wait to see the results!

I didn't actually vote on your poll because I didn't even notice that you had one (sorry). But as far as dying your hair goes, I think if you want to, do it. It was kind of fun the first few times (now I have to do it because I am going prematurely grey). The upkeep gets boring (to me anyway, but maybe that is because I don't have the money or the patience to do any of the really fun stuff). I do love red hair though and would be sorry to see it go. I always wanted red hair myself and feel truly blessed to have a daughter with red hair. But I do think highlights are beautiful and think that a change in your hair can make you feel really pretty. :)

I think you should try it. It's just hair. It will grow back if you hate it, or you could add some red back in. I have to be honest though, I really hated Linsey Lohan as a blonde. She is much cuter with red hair. I love your color too. I'm jealous at times. :)

Speaking from experience of having people screw up hair, I would find someone that you can trust to do it first. Do your research of salons, and come to terms with the fact that if it doesn't turn out, its okay, there is ALWAYS a fix for it. :) I know some girls that can do a really good job if you are interested. :)

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I actually have a good friend who is going to do it. She is awesome and her specialty is blonde- plus I feel like I can be honest and tell her to fix it if she needs to! It's not going to be permanent, but I am pretty excited to try something really different! I can always dye it back.

No highlights, just do it all the way. And you are not allowed to comment on you own hair for two days. Let it sink and and get use to it for a couple days before decideing if you want her to change it back.I totally think you'll rock the blond. Then you can let the rest of us know if blonds really do have more fun...

As long as its not permanent...cause that just wouldn't be you. I don't think it will look bad- you're right about all those people looking good as blondes. They can pull it off...but I personally think each of them look BEST with their red, natural color. I wouldn't dye mine if it wasn't gray. But I say do it for a change...then go back

If you do it, I'd say to do highlights. Then it would look more like a strawberry blonde in stead of just BLONDE. I like Linsdey Lohan's...top left or bottom left. If you like it, then you can go overall if you want. Are you going to do anything before the cabin?

I was thinking maybe try highlights first. But, all of those pictures look awesome with all blonde and I think you would too. So, go for it. I can't wait to see pictures, whatever you decide to do.

PS- I love your natural color too so either way, you're good.

Connie,
Just do it! Blondes I hear have more fun anyway! I had a lot of blonde highlights put in when I first moved back to AZ in 2001. Yes, I did get treated differently, in a good way! I know that sounds silly, but just wait and see....

Connie said...

Haha everyone is so funny. I don't know if I'll do highlights. I probably will go all blonde. Either way, nothing is permanent and I could try highlights later or whatever. Thanks for all of the encouragement! Haha

just do what you want, that's what I do and sometimes are better than others...all those girls up there are rockin' it! esp. lyndsay and donna...and don't feel like you can only get highlights, go all out if you want to. I loved it when my hair was blonde, esp. when the roots started to come out and show the contrast, like Mia's...LOVE HER, HELLO! anyway...i thought I totally commented on here but I guess not...so that's what I think.

Camie said...

First of all the most I've ever done is highlights, and I've only done that twice. So like you, I've never gone full out and dyed my entire head of hair (even now that I'm getting a few gray strands). My recomendation, start of with something subtle. Try some blonde highlights. You would hate to jump into something, spend all that money, end up hating it and pay to have it fixed. And I personally think Nicole Kidman looks awful with blonde hair. Lindsey and "Donna" can pull it off alright, but even theirs is a little too blonde for my taste. But it all comes down to what you want and what you think will make you happy.

Gee, lots of comments! After thinking about this for one whole day (yes, this is what I think about all day), I am reminded of a quote that captures my opinion perfectly- "GO FOR IT PIG!"
-The Great Muppet Caper, classic

HAHA kira you are so dumb and funny! I would take that as an insult.

Man, I guess dying hair is a big issue! Maybe that's why I'm afraid to do it. Connie is making a pretty dramatic change in color and I say, hey, if you're ready for it Connie, go for it. Britney will do an awesome job on it. She is careful and takes her time. It's not like you are asking everyone which tattoo you should get. You can always go back if you don't like it. Close your eyes, bite the bullet, and your beautiful face will come through anyway.

Good luck Connie - I have always loved your hair color, but I understand the need to do something drastic and change it up a bit! It will always grow back, but I also agree that it's wise not to do anything too drastic! Take it in babysteps and have fun! Of all the "red to blond" pics you posted I think the best one is of Lindsey in the green tank... definately not her true red, but not bleach blonde either!

Camie said...

Connie-I agree with Christy. I love the picture with Lindsey in the green tank. Its enough blonde to give you a change, while letting a little of your true color show through. I think that would really suit you. I think 100% blonde might wash you out.

Connie said...

I know it'll be a huge change, but I don't want to go strawberry blonde, I think I'd rather be more blonde than that. Oh well, I can't please everyone and some people are sure to not like it. But I'm pretty sure I want to be mostly blonde. We'll see. I'll definitely post pics! Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement!

Connie said...

I do like the green tank pic. I might try that someday too. Who knows?

Kristie said...

I think you should go all blonde Connie! I think it is great that you have the courage to make such a big change with your hair. I can relate to you, because I didn't start coloring my hair until a couple years after I was married. And I have mostly done highlights. I did change my hair color, but it was still very similar to my natural hair color. I have been wanting to do a big change and color my hair dark brown or black, but have never built up enough courage to do it. Plus it would cost a lot for the up keep. Any way, I say GO FOR IT!!! I can't wait to see what you look like! Ü

Lexie & Sharrid said...

I'd do all blonde if you want to. I like the pic of Lyndsay all blonde, she looks awesome! I don't know, some people are afraid of drastic, but not me and when you want a change, you don't want to spend money and feel like it wasn't that big of a difference when it's all said and done. My next thing I think is to keep growing my hair as it is, and when it gets to a certain length, I'll fix the cut up and dye it dark brown I think. I know I'll go short blonde again, that was too fun!

Wow! That is a lot of comments! The two things that come to my mind are 1) Anne of Green Gables...but I guess you're not looking for a "Raven black" :) and 2) A bumper sticker that I read that I quote often..."Blondes are noticed but redheads are remembered!" I've always been partial to redheads though. Just think, if you had blonde hair in high school you wouldn't have been able to sit on the the "redhead row" in yound women's. I found out later that many people were yearning for red hair just so they could sit on our row! Honestly....it sounds fun to have a change! I say go for it...you probably already have anyway.

Hope you enjoy it!
